SEVERE WEATHER RECORD 1998

A summary of severe weather warnings
and other notable weather extremes for
Northamptonshire since February 1998.

9 April		Three consecutive days of rainfall, marked by 
		several thunderstorms and hail, culminated today
		in severe flooding across the county. Several roads
		were closed including the A45 trunk route. Some
		villages were cut off. 

10 April	53.4mm of rainfall recorded over past 24 hours.
		Severe flooding in Northampton in areas adjacent
		to the River Nene. 100+ homes under water in St James 
		and Far Cotton. Army brought in to assist in evacuation.
		Worst flooding in Northampton for 50 years.

		
6 August	Sunniest day of the year so far: 12.2 hours. Previous
		high was 17 May (12.1 hours)

10 August	Warmest day of the year: 28.3C (recorded at
		1630 hours GMT). Other highs: 27.7C (9 August) and 
		28.1C (11 August).
		
11 August	Warmest night of the year so far: 15.5C. Previous
		high: 15.4C (24 June).

26 October	35mph winds (gale force 7) recorded. Slight
		structural damage and fallen trees. High winds
		(force 6) recorded since 22nd.

27 October	28.7mm rainfall. Previous highs 21.2mm (4 Sept) and
		53.4mm (9 April). Localised flooding. Reports of
		amber alert on River Ise at Geddington.

30 October	Amber alert reported on the River Avon upstream of Rugby.

17 November	Sharp air frost. Minimum temperature: -3.5C.

18-28 November	Longest period with no sunshine recorded (instrument:
		Campbell-Stokes recorder).
